Two months ago, as Frankenstorm raged through the region and I was steeling myself for a rainy journey north to World Fantasy in Toronto, my good friend Stephen Volk (award-winning screenwriter of Ghostwatch and The Awakening) asked me if I wanted to take part on The Next Big Thing. Alas, I had too much on my plate at the time, and I had to pass. Fortunately, this month, the opportunity has come again, thanks to Alice Henderson, author of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Portal Through Time, Voracious, and the forthcoming Fresh Meat (based on the hit TV series Supernatural).
“The Next Big Thing” is a series of blog entries by different writers. When one is tagged in a post, he or she responds by posting a set of questions and tagging a number of other writers, each of whom continues the process.
Since I’ve just returned from Seton Hill University (where I serve twice a year as one of the residency writers in the Writing Popular Fiction program), I thought it might be fun to take the title “Next Big Thing” seriously by highlighting the work of five exciting, up-and-coming writers who have recently been associated with the WPF program – a group of writers who really do define the term “Next Big Thing.”
Since Alice has just posted her responses, I now have a week to put a complete post together and present my list of Next Big Thing writer. I don’t think it will take that long. Maybe a couple days. So be sure to stop back for my crack at the Q&A.
