“Echoes” now available on YouTube

Rodney Altman’s short film of my story “Echoes” garnered good notice on the festival circuit a few years back, winning Best Cinematography at the Fusion Film Festival in 2004.

It’s a dark little film, beautifully produced with strong performances and a haunting score. Take a look. Let me know what you think.

Based on what he has accomplished with this material, Altman is clearly a director to watch, a rising young filmmaker with an incredible eye for detail.

The original story first appeared in Twilight Zone Magazine in 1983. Since then it has been filmed twice (Altman’s version is the second) and reprinted in over a dozen magazines and anthologies. It is currently in print in This Way to Egress (Ash-Tree Press) and Visions: Short Fantasy & SF (Fantasist Enterprises).

During a deployment a couple of years ago I found a copy of the Year’s Best Horror 12 and through most of the stories weren’t very entertaining, but yours was amazing. I think it’s the shortest story I ever read and it was so well crafted that the ending had more impact than I ever could have expected to come from such a short piece.

It was the shining light in that collection. I really enjoyed it.

Great hearing from you. So glad you liked the story. Where were you deployed, and how did you come across the book? That issue of YBH has received good distribution overseas, and I always enjoyed hearing stories about where the book has turned up.

BTW: in addition to the publications named above, the story has also appeared on the audio CD Veins: The Soundtrack. In all, not a bad run for a piece short enough to be considered flash fiction.

Thanks so much for your kind words!
