Cooper insisted that it be removed from the final cut. His reasoning: &#8220;It stopped the show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A victim of judicious editing, that scene now joins other lost segments of film history, such as the pie fight deleted from\u00a0<em>Doctor Strangelove <\/em>and the\u00a0jitterbug number edited out of\u00a0<em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>\u00a0&#8212; removed because they detracted from the central story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And now we have one more item to add to the list of lost scenes: the &#8220;Egress&#8221; spider from <em>Nightmare Cinema<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><em>Above: David Slade&#8217;s sketch of the spider from the deleted opening of &#8220;This Way to Egress.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14815\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Spider-Wrangler-Credit-2-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Spider-Wrangler-Credit-2-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Spider-Wrangler-Credit-2-768x676.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Spider-Wrangler-Credit-2-1024x902.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dedicated credit readers (of which there were many at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/2019\/06\/30\/nightmare-cinemaqa-at-the-parkway-theater-part-one\/\">Parkway Theater<\/a> last Saturday) may note the inclusion of a spider wrangler in the film\u2019s final credits, a listing that might seem to refer to <em>Nightmare Cinema<\/em>\u2019s first segment: Alejandro Bruges\u2019s \u201cThe Things in the Woods.\u201d There are certainly plenty of spiders in that episode. Thousands of them. But all are either CGI effects or sculpted props. Nothing to wrangle there. So why a spider wrangler?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here\u2019s the story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14850\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/1-for-post-Davids-spider-sequence-2-432x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/1-for-post-Davids-spider-sequence-2-432x1024.jpg 432w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/1-for-post-Davids-spider-sequence-2.jpg 721w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although the script for \u201cThis Way to Egress\u201d closely follows the arc of \u201cTraumatic Descent\u201d (the story on which the film is based), a number of scenes were added during the final rewrite. The most substantial of them, inserted into the middle of the story, extend the protagonist\u2019s exploration of a labyrinthian office building.\u00a0 Retained in the final cut, those scenes support the story&#8217;s progressive decline from everyday reality to surreal nightmare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By contrast, the spider scene was intended to serve as a kind of preview &#8212; a visual overture for the nightmare to come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Two versions of the spider scene were considered before filming began. One, which is depicted in David Slade&#8217;s storyboard at left, opens with the shot of a web clinging to a ceiling. Moving closer, we see a spider perched within the web. Closer still, we see the spider&#8217;s fangs and staring eyes as it peers down at a doctor&#8217;s waiting room. A second version of the scene, this one included in the shooting script, opens with the close-up of the spider&#8217;s face then rotates until we find ourselves looking over the spider\u2019s humped back and down through its web. Far below, seemingly caught within the web, a woman and two children sit in a waiting room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14789\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0334-2-271x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0334-2-271x300.jpg 271w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0334-2-768x851.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0334-2-925x1024.jpg 925w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0334-2.jpg 1070w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Either way, the spider sequence would have provided foreshadowing for the monsters of &#8220;This Way to Egress&#8221; and a callback to the eight-legged invaders 0f Alejandro Burges&#8217;s &#8220;The Thing in the Woods.&#8221; But unlike the bugs in &#8220;The Woods,&#8221; the spider in the scene from &#8220;Egress&#8221; was real, which called for a wrangler &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceworldreport.com\/articles\/23108\/20150310\/entomologist-diana-terranova-is-hollywoods-go-to-female-bug-wrangler-exclusive-interview.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diana Terranova<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A trained entomologist and member of the Animal Handlers Union, Diana arrived on the &#8220;Egress&#8221; set with a collection of plastic boxes. Inside each, sometimes perched on a piece of twig, a bug awaited its audition. First up, a whip scorpion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14898\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tarantula-3-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tarantula-3-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tarantula-3-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tarantula-3-1024x567.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>Though neither a true scorpion nor a spider, the whip scorpion (above right) might have fit the bill were it not for the size of its fangs. David wanted them to be huge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Next came a tarantula (left), whose fangs were considerably larger but nonetheless dwarfed by the size of its body. Back in the box!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14791\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0348-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0348-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0348-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_0348-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ironically, the role went to the smallest of the lot (right), a tiny black speck the size of a fingertip but with fangs that bore a striking resemblance to David&#8217;s initial sketch. Shot in extreme closeup, those mouthparts would appear walrus size.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The spider scene was filmed by a second-unit team working in a corner of the &#8220;Egress&#8221; set, a conventional office space that had been transformed into a mold-and-grit covered nightmare by production designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laurenfitzsimmons.com\/egress-nightmare-cinema\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren Fitzsimmons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14885 \" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/applying-grit-2-2-cropped-300x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/applying-grit-2-2-cropped-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/applying-grit-2-2-cropped-768x694.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/applying-grit-2-2-cropped-1024x925.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To work her magic, Lauren and her crew spent hours applying fine, black grit to the floor, walls, ceiling, and furniture of the set. Resembling black mold, the grit looked like the stuff you might find if you opened a broken refrigerator that had been left closed for a year. Little bits of black grit everywhere!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The second unit work was going well until the spider, evidently energized by the lights, decided to bolt and hide among the grit. A search ensued, the spider was found, and the scene was shot without further incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15023\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/spiderscreen-1024x526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/spiderscreen-1024x526.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/spiderscreen-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/spiderscreen-768x394.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/spiderscreen.jpg 1360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/>But then, weeks later, David and his editor Tony Kearns (who also worked on <em>Black Mirror<\/em>&#8216;s &#8220;Bandersnatch&#8221; and &#8220;Metalhead&#8221;) reviewed the footage and decided not to use it. As David explains, &#8220;It was such a powerful, startling image that it stole from the first scene.&#8221; Or, in the words of Merian C. Cooper, it &#8220;stopped the show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Nightmare Cinema<\/em> was released to theaters on June 21 and is currently available via video on demand from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/movie\/nightmare-cinema\/id1460917868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iTunes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nightmare-Cinema-Mickey-Rourke\/dp\/B07S3D281T\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=nightmare+cinema&amp;qid=1560719093&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fandangonow.com\/details\/movie\/nightmare-cinema-2019\/MMVB3F23E3D8F1535FD5ED392CF14F75BDC8?ele=list&amp;elc=MMVB3F23E3D8F1535FD5ED392CF14F75BDC8&amp;eli=19&amp;eci=MMVB3F23E3D8F1535FD5ED392CF14F75BDC8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FandangoNow<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07SSDR64D\/ref=atv_dp_mv_of_dp_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DVD and Blu-Ray<\/a> editions are scheduled for release on September 3.
