Titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtcatalog.com\/robert-yune\/2015\/08\/22-indisputable-reasons-pittsburgh-is-the-perfect-city-for-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 Indisputable Reasons Pittsburgh Is The Perfect City For Writers<\/a>,&#8221; the post does an excellent job of laying out some of the major reasons I still live in western Pennsylvania. And now there&#8217;s one more. Members not present:\u00a0Terri Bertha, John Hardic, Dave Lasota, Frank Oreto.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Founded in the 1980s, HWA currently boasts a membership over 1,400 members from around the world, with a healthy contingent residing in western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, writers <a href=\"https:\/\/saratantlinger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sara Tantlinger<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gorelets.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael A. Arnzen<\/a>\u00a0formed the Pittsburgh Chapter, which held its second meeting last Saturday at the Monroeville Library. In addition to giving some local writers a break from their keyboards, the meeting provided a chance for us to hear about the exciting endeavors some of our peers have been up to. Here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15614\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ben-rubin.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ben-rubin.jpeg 336w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ben-rubin-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/>Channeling his lifelong interest in the genre into a career, Ben Rubin is currently working to preserve and promote the history of horror film and literature for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgearomerofoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George A. Holmes<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Strange House Books). Her latest book, the novella\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Be-Devoured-Sara-Tantlinger-ebook\/dp\/B07R6ZXD9X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>To Be Devoured<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(from Unnerving) was released this past summer.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, fellow HWA Pittsburgh organizer Michael A. Arnzen (also a Stoker-Award-winning poet) has been serving as the academic consultant for a series entitled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.darkmoonbooks.com\/primers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exploring Dark Fiction<\/a>\u00a0(Dark Moon Books), which explores the modern masters of short horror fiction. The most recent book in the series considers the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darkmoonbooks.com\/Primer_4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Ford<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other writers in attendance were\u00a0Doug Gwilym and Frank Oreto (editors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/parsec-sff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parsec<\/a> anthology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Triangulation-Appetites-Frank-Oreto\/dp\/1548648116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Triangulations<\/em><\/a>),\u00a0Nelson Pyles (creator of the fiction podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/thewickedlibrary.com\/nelson-w-pyles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Wicked Library<\/em><\/a>), and Gwendolyn Kiste (whose\u00a0new story\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/audiobooks\/details\/Gwendolyn_Kiste_The_Girls_from_the_Horror_Movie?id=AQAAAECstmn21M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Girls from the Horror Movie&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0is part of\u00a0<em>Come Join Us By the Fire<\/em>, the flagship project from Tor&#8217;s new horror imprint, Nightfire!).<\/p>\n<p>I could go on. But you get the idea. There was a lot of talent there.<\/p>\n<p>In sum, if you&#8217;re interested in writing horror and you live within driving distance of Pittsburgh, you might want to check out HWA Pittsburgh when it holds its next meeting in late winter or early spring. I&#8217;ll be sharing the exact date when it&#8217;s announced.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter meetings are open to any level of HWA membership, including new\/potential members, though the requirement for continual participation is that you are a dues-paying HWA member.
