Take the creature in Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein<\/em>. He ends the 1818 novel by promising to vanish forever, but then \u2013 after leaping onto an ice floe in the frozen north, he returns again five years later in the Richard Brinsley Peake stage adaptation titled Presumption: or the Fate of Frankenstein<\/em><\/a>. And then, after Peake dispatches the creature in an avalanche, the monser continues to return in countless stage-and-film adaptations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All of which just goes to show, you can\u2019t keep a good monster down.<\/p>\n

Alas, the same is true for real-world monsters like Covid-Delta. A few months ago, it seemed we were moving on from the coronavirus, so much so that the good people at Prime Stage Theatre<\/a> officially announced that my new adaptation of Shelley\u2019s novel would premiere November 5 at Pittsburgh New Hazlett Theatre. But now, in a scenario that sounds like the elevator pitch for a Toho monster movie (Frankenstein vs The Mutant Spiked Protein<\/em>), it appears covid is back with enough vengeance to force a delay.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the official press release from Prime Stage announcing their revised 2021 season.<\/p>\n

To ensure safety for our patrons, actors and staff, we have changed our originally scheduled large-cast production of\u00a0Frankenstein<\/strong>\u00a0to a\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>–<\/span>actor play<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>KARLOFF The Man and The Monster<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Frankenstein<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is rescheduled to be\u00a0<\/span>produced in November 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span>

This\u00a0<\/span>is a proactive measure to limit exposure to the COVID<\/span>–<\/span>19 coronavirus. Given the uptick of\u00a0<\/span>cases, we believe caution for the balance of the year remains appropriate.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span>

On November 5th,\u00a0Prime<\/span>\u00a0Stage<\/span>\u00a0Theatre<\/span>\u00a0will<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>present<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>KARLOFF The Man and The Monster<\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>written\u00a0<\/span>by Randy Browser and directed by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Art DeConciliis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Tickets to this show and our entire season will\u00a0<\/span>go on\u00a0<\/span>sale\u00a0<\/span>soon<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span>

This will be our first in<\/span>–<\/span>person performance at the New Hazlett Theater since March 14<\/span>, 2020,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when\u00a0<\/span>we had to close<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Outsiders<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>du<\/span>e to Covid<\/span>–<\/span>19 and present\u00a0Prime<\/span>\u00a0Online streaming for our\u00a0<\/span>24th<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Season<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span>

\"\"KARLOFF<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is an original one<\/span>–<\/span>actor production where the famous cinema favorite Boris Karloff\u00a0<\/span>comes<\/span> to life. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This multi-<\/span>media one<\/span>–<\/span>act experience traces the origins of Karloff\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>career and carries\u00a0<\/span>the audience into his rise as one of the most renowned movie monster actors and\u00a0stage<\/span>\u00a0actors of\u00a0<\/span>all time.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

And so we’re going to have to wait a little longer for our Frankenstein<\/em> to premiere.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, in the meantime, Prime Stage is planning a virtual event titled Beyond the Imagination<\/em>, during which I will be joining Director Art DeConciliis and Producing Artistic Director Wayne Brinda for a conversation about all things Frankenstein<\/em>. The free event is scheduled to take place on October 4 at 7:00 PM.<\/p>\n

In addition, also on October 4, we’ll be launching the third season of the podcast Prime State Mystery Theatre<\/em><\/a>, with new episodes dropping each Thursday through the beginning of November. Our new story, which takes place in a theatre during a production of Frankenstein<\/em>, will invite listeners to follow clues that involve trap doors, a devil\u2019s portal, and a roster of eccentric characters \u2013 some of whom may not be entirely what they seem.<\/p>\n

Looking farther ahead, I hope to produce a couple more Frankenstein-themed stories for Mystery Theatre<\/em> between now and the play’s new release in 2022.<\/p>\n

We’ll get there, and when we do, I trust you’ll find it was all worth the wait. After all, you can’t keep a good monster down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
