{"id":7341,"date":"2015-04-13T19:55:22","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T23:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/?p=7341"},"modified":"2023-07-07T22:43:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T02:43:46","slug":"sinister-appetites-dark-discoveries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/2015\/04\/13\/sinister-appetites-dark-discoveries\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinister Appetites &#038; <i>Dark Discoveries<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Aickman-cropped-reduced.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-7403\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Aickman-cropped-reduced.jpg\" alt=\"Aickman cropped reduced\" width=\"297\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Aickman-cropped-reduced.jpg 629w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Aickman-cropped-reduced-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve been a fan of the stories of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Aickman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Aickman<\/a> since I first discovered them\u00a0in the pages to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfsite.com\/fsf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F&amp;SF<\/a><\/em> in the 1976 and then went on to savor\u00a0his collections <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/B00JNYP57C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cold Hand in Mine<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/B00KEW6A9O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Wine Dark Sea<\/em><\/a>, and others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Strange, surreal, and imbued the essence of dreams &#8212; his tales helped kindle my interest in quiet horror.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now, decades after I first discovered them, Aickman&#8217;s stories\u00a0remain among the most haunting\u00a0stories I have ever read.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cold-Hand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7419 \" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cold-Hand-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cold Hand\" width=\"126\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cold-Hand-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Cold-Hand.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a>Last November at the <a href=\"http:\/\/strantzas.com\/2014\/10\/world-fantasy-convention-2014-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Fantasy Convention<\/a>, I had the opportunity to take part in a panel discussion of Aickman&#8217;s stories. Along the way, I shared my thoughts on the Freudian and Jungian aspects \u00a0of &#8220;The Swords&#8221; and &#8220;The Inner Room&#8221; &#8211;tales\u00a0that roil with undercurrents of sexual tension and painful longing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Following the panel, I was approached by <em>Dark Discoveries<\/em> editor Aaron J. French, who asked if I would be interested in expanding the\u00a0comments for an edition of his magazine to center on the theme &#8220;Sinister Appetites.&#8221; I didn&#8217;t need to think twice about that one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7370\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dd.jpg\" alt=\"dd\" width=\"181\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a>A copy of that &#8220;Sinister Appetites&#8221; issue arrived today, and it&#8217;s\u00a0a beauty, with\u00a0fiction by Scott Edelman and Storm Constantine, features by John Palisano and Joe McKinney, columns by \u00a0Yvonne Navarro and Gary A. Braunbeck &#8212; and lots more great stuff by some of the top names in the field.
