<\/a>Sacr\u00e9 bleu!<\/em><\/p>\nA new French translation of one of my growing-up-in-Levittown<\/a>\u00a0stories will soon appear in the French anthology T\u00e9n\u00e8bres 2015<\/a>, edited by Beno\u00eet Domis and published by Dreampress<\/a>.<\/p>\n The story, which originally appeared in Twilight Zone Magazine<\/em><\/a> back in 1982, and has since been reprinted in Year\u2019s Best Horror: Series XII<\/em><\/a> and my collection This Way to Egress<\/em><\/a>, is set on the outskirts of Philadelphia during the 1960’s. The story features a few\u00a0vintage Americanisms, not the last of which is its title, \u201cMrs. Halfbooger\u2019s Basement,\u201d which has been translated for this book as \u201cLa cave de Mme Morveburger.\u201d<\/p>\n I’ll have to wait to get my contributor\u2019s copy\u00a0to see\u00a0how the other Americanisms came out, things like \u201ccreepo!\u201d and \u201cboogerface\u201d \u2013 all the endearing terms that mid-20th\u00a0century kids used on one another back in my salad days.<\/p>\n Correction: I just heard from\u00a0Beno\u00eet Domis, who writes, “Mort Castle’s story is listed as “L\u2019amour, la haine et la mer d\u2019ordures, si belle” (not “Le spot de la mort”) and it’s the translation of “Love, Hate, and the Beautiful Junkyard Sea,” a story first published in <\/em>Masque IV. ” <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The story “Le spot de la mort” is by Phil Becker. It’s all listed correctly on the Dreampress website<\/a>. I\u2019m hoping to receive my copy tout de suite<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/a>The book also contains a tale\u00a0by American writer\u00a0Mort Castle<\/a>. The TOC lists his story\u00a0as \u201cLe spot de la mort,\u201d which in English would be \u201cThe Spot of Death\u201d or more likely \u201cThe Mark of Death.\u201d I\u2019m familiar with much of Castle\u2019s work, but this title seems new to me. All the more reason to look forward to getting the book.<\/p>\n
