Either way, it&#8217;s a wonder to behold, a doorway to a hot spot of subterranean fires that recalls\u00a0the opening lines from Canto Three of Dante&#8217;s <em>Inferno<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Only those elements time cannot wear<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Were made before me. It&#8217;s the volcano responsible for nearly taking out the village of\u00a0Pahoa back in October. Situated over the volcanic hot spot responsible for forming all of the Hawaiian Islands, it remains one of the most consistently active volcanic sites in the world. And since volcanoes feature prominently in my current writing project, I was keen on getting a firsthand look at the monster and its\u00a0surrounding terrain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/three-guides-even-smaller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-8131\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/three-guides-even-smaller-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"three guides even smaller\" width=\"332\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/three-guides-even-smaller-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/three-guides-even-smaller.jpg 428w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/a>Dante had the poet Virgil to guide him on his journey. As both Dante&#8217;s soul mate and long-term resident of the Inferno, Virgil was well suited for showing\u00a0a novice around the wonders of the dolorous abyss.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For my trip, I had three guides (see left): information-specialist Ginny Connolly, award-winning travel writer Brandon Wilson, and long-term Hawaii resident John Connolly. Wife, friend, and brother &#8212; a perfect trinity to keep me on the straight road to enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/51X2iyPCaUL._SY344_BO1204203200_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-8140\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/51X2iyPCaUL._SY344_BO1204203200_-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"51X2iyPCaUL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_\" width=\"248\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a>Winner of the Lowell Thomas Award, which is given each year by the Society of American Travel Writers, Brandon Wilson currently makes his home in Volcano Village, a few miles east of the active crater. You can read more about him at his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Brandon-Wilson\/e\/B001JS4J0O\/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1438108070&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a> page and at his <a href=\"http:\/\/pilgrimstales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. A seasoned traveler and fine storyteller, Brandon led the way through the rain forest surrounding Kilauea Iki (south of the active crater), then down a steep mountain pass and out onto an\u00a0expanse of hardened lava where steam rose\u00a0from vents in rocky\u00a0fissures. It was like stepping onto the surface of an alien world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Afterward, Brandon led us back out through the rain forest and into a cylindrical cavern (below left) that once served as a conduit for flowing lava. Molded with organic curves reminiscent of the Queen Alien&#8217;s lair in James Cameron&#8217;s <em>Aliens<\/em>, the tube stretches deep beneath a volcanic mountain, through darkness and back into leafy sunlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/volcano-tube.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-8143\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/volcano-tube-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"volcano tube\" width=\"282\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/volcano-tube-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/volcano-tube-1024x789.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><\/a>Puddles dot its floor while\u00a0thready roots from the forest above dangle overhead\u00a0like living stalactites. My notes on the place\u00a0will certainly come in handy as I expand the climax of &#8220;The Others,&#8221; which takes place in the underground lair of creatures called &#8220;the fang-claws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Interestingly, the\u00a0lava tube also brought to mind the underground passageway that Professor Challenger visits\u00a0in my story &#8220;King of the Moon&#8221; from the newly released <em><a href=\"http:\/\/edgewebsite.com\/books\/professorchallenger\/challenger-catalog.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professor Challenger: New Worlds, Lost Places<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Challenger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7776 \" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Challenger-184x300.jpg\" alt=\"Challenger\" width=\"188\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Challenger-184x300.jpg 184w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Challenger.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/a>Time and again, whether presenting \u00a0wonders that informed new projects or recalled\u00a0previous ones, these\u00a0travels around the Hawaiian islands proved\u00a0time and again that\u00a0the connection between life and art flows both ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This post is part two of a series about researching a novel based on the previously published stories &#8220;Daughters of Prime&#8221; and &#8220;The Others.&#8221; You can find the first installment <a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/2015\/07\/27\/researching-a-novel-my-lost-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. For the next, we&#8217;ll take a look at\u00a0Mauna Kea &#8212; the tallest mountain in the United States and possibly (depending on how you measure) the entire planet. I have some photos that compare it to the Amazonian plateau that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/0486400603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lost World<\/a><\/em>. It&#8217;s pretty cool stuff.
