{"id":8205,"date":"2015-08-01T10:59:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-01T14:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/?p=8205"},"modified":"2023-07-07T22:43:40","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T02:43:40","slug":"researching-a-novel-lost-worlds-above-the-clouds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/2015\/08\/01\/researching-a-novel-lost-worlds-above-the-clouds\/","title":{"rendered":"Researching a Novel: <i><br>Lost Worlds above the Clouds<\/i><\/br>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/tallest-mountains-2-cropped-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-8215\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/tallest-mountains-2-cropped-2.jpg\" alt=\"tallest mountains 2 cropped (2)\" width=\"350\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/tallest-mountains-2-cropped-2.jpg 430w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/tallest-mountains-2-cropped-2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><em>It was a dull gray landscape, and as I gradually deciphered the details of it I realized that it represented a long and enormously high line of cliffs exactly like an immense cataract seen in the distance, with a sloping, tree-clad plain in the foreground.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That&#8217;s George Edward Challenger describing the Amazonian plateau in Arthur Conan Doyle&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Lost_World_(Conan_Doyle_novel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lost World<\/a><\/em>, and it&#8217;s a description that came to mind when I got my first look at Mauna Kea &#8212; the tallest mountain in Hawaii and (arguably) in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mount-roraima.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8223 \" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mount-roraima-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"mount roraima\" width=\"218\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mount-roraima-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/mount-roraima.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My\u00a0photo above shows Mauna Kea in the foreground with\u00a0Hawaii&#8217;s second tallest peak,\u00a0Mauna Loa, in the distance behind it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Towering over 13,000 feet above sea level, the peaks are nearly half as tall as Mount Everest, but if measured from the ocean floor (the true base of each of these volcanic mountains), they measure over 33,000 feet, making them the tallest mountains on the planet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/lostworld12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8249 \" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/lostworld12.jpg\" alt=\"lostworld12\" width=\"199\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>In comparison, the real-world mountain that inspired Doyle&#8217;s <em>The Lost World\u00a0<\/em>(Mount Roraima in eastern Venezuela, above right), measures a little over 9,000 feet, but the wonder of it\u00a0has less to do with height than the\u00a0grandeur of its vertical cliffs and the possibilities of what might lie hidden\u00a0in such a remote location.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fiction, facts are the springboard for possibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Herb-Kane_Navigator-on-Observatory-Small-640x804.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8267\" src=\"https:\/\/lawrencecconnolly.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Herb-Kane_Navigator-on-Observatory-Small-640x804-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"Herb-Kane_Navigator-on-Observatory-Small-640x804\" width=\"257\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The isolated summit of a high\u00a0mountain also plays a role in my current project, the book-length expansion of the\u00a0&#8220;Daughters of Prime&#8221; stories. In those stories, an exploratory mission establishes an observation post on a high cliff only to discover that the site is revered as sacred by the creatures of the valley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Coincidentally, travel writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Brandon-Wilson\/e\/B001JS4J0O\/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1438373118&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brandon Wilson<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0informed me of an ongoing conflict between an observatory atop\u00a0Mount Kea and some island residents who feel that the presence of a science\u00a0installation violates the sacredness of the mountain.
