Heinlein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Back in the 1940s, Heinlein gave what may well be the best writing advice ever given, a five step approach to achieving success as a spinner of tales. And last week at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinbookshop.com\/home-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Penguin Bookshop<\/a>, an attentive crowd joined me in a consideration of those rules and how they apply to the writing, selling, and adapting of the story &#8220;Traumatic Descent&#8221; (a.k.a. &#8220;This Way to Egress&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the story&#8217;s first appearance in Tom and Elizabeth Monteleone&#8217;s anthology <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/659372.Borderlands_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Borderlands 3<\/a>,<\/em> through its numerous reprintings and recent adaptation for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mickgarrisinterviews.com\/#!about\/cfvg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mick Garris&#8217;s<\/a> forthcoming feature film <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mickgarrisinterviews.com\/#!NIGHTMARE-CINEMA-Update\/cde0\/56d7a9cd0cf2cacdc4229d72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nightmare Cinema<\/a><\/em>, the story has certainly taken on a life of its own. A few years back sf writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfwriter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert J. Sawyer<\/a> added <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfwriter.com\/ow05.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sixth<\/a>, and more recently commentator\u00a0Charlie Jane Anders disputed them over at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/5666113\/the-famous-writing-advice-that-could-seriously-mess-up-your-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">io9<\/a>. Surely, there must be something to them to keep the conversation going for so long.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In any event,\u00a0they&#8217;ve worked for me, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to share the reasons\u00a0with the good people who stopped by The Penguin on April 27.
