Between Books

Between BooksThey say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. That’s generally true, but there are exceptions . . . and Between Books is one of them.

You see, I knew from the first time I stepped inside that I had found someplace remarkable.

Between Books is a real book store. Within its long narrow aisles you’ll find a massive collection of current and classic titles — lots of things that you are not likely to find anywhere else. And it’s all presided over by a knowledgeable manager with a gift for pairing his customers with titles that are just right for them. Yeah, I know a good thing when I see it. And to prove it, here’s what I had to say about the place two years ago, in my collection Voices: Tales of Horror.

Between Books, one of the most incredible bookstores I’ve ever visited, sits in an unremarkable strip mall in Claymont, Delaware. The store has a long, narrow interior stacked floor to ceiling with virtually everything relating to sf, fantasy, horror, comics, and games. In an age when bookstores come and go and the industry giants make news filing bankruptcy and predicting doom, it’s nice to find a place that’s entering its fourth decade of successful bookselling.

Alas, three years into that fourth decade, this remarkable store is getting pushed out of its space to make room for (of all things) a rental outlet.

What’s this world coming to?

If you live anywhere near the Claymont area, you owe it to yourself to drop by, peruse the stacks, chat with owner Greg Schauer, purchase some great books at close-out prices, and see this one-of-a-kind place that will soon be history.
